Can infection be transmited via earrings?

I bought earrings to my wife. Before I bought them the seller put them (earrings) into her ears. It seems to me to be not hygienic. Do I really have to wary about that? If yes, what should I do to prevent the possible infection. If I put the earrings into deodorant will it be sufficient? I though also about the boiling the earrings, but I am not sure that it cannot destroy the earrings (they are made from gold and diamond).
