Anyone know this movie?

Probably made in the late 80's... A boy is taken from his parents to a military base & put in a fairly nice room with a 2-way mirror so people can monitor him... He escapes by getting into some robot... He's carried to a military hanger and finds a spaceship. He gets in & I think it takes off. Uhh... The space ship can talk to him & is really metallic looking on the inside & out... At the end he returns home and his parents are really old... I think the kid is about 9 to 13... That's about all I can remember... I saw this when I was younger & was just hoping to find it again... Thx if you can help!
